Ifá is an ancient indigenous divination system and spiritual tradition of the Yoruba people, originating in West Africa. Overseen by the Orisha Orunmila, the deity of wisdom and destiny, Ifá encompasses a profound body of knowledge including philosophy, ethics, medicine, and cosmology. Recognized by UNESCO in 2008 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, it uses binary signs to reference life's circumstances through poetic verses, guiding individuals toward harmony, purpose, and protection.
Ifá originated in Ile-Ife, the spiritual cradle of Yoruba civilization. Founded by Orunmila, it spread across Yorubaland, Benin, Togo, and beyond through cultural expansion and empires like Oyo and Dahomey. Transported via the transatlantic slave trade, it survived and evolved in the Americas, influencing traditions like Cuban Santería.
Today, Ifá maintains strong roots in Nigeria and Benin while thriving globally through diaspora communities and modern revivals.
Orunmila, witness to creation and guardian of destiny, gifted Ifá to humanity. Known for profound insight, he teaches balance, patience, and alignment with one's Ori (personal destiny).
The heart of Ifá is its oral literary corpus of 256 Odu signs, each containing hundreds of poetic verses (ese). These verses encode history, mythology, ethics, and solutions to life's challenges, transmitted orally by priests.
